Confirmed Career Lab Sessions

How to Ace the Data Science Interview by Mark Meloon, PhD, ServiceNow

While many people fear interviews, you must remember you wouldn’t have been granted one unless they were interested in you. Sadly, most candidates spend considerable time (and money!) learning data science, painstakingly crafting their resume (and LinkedIn profile), and work long hours on personal projects only to do little to no preparation for interviews! But if you don’t know how to prepare, what does one do?

In this talk, you will learn what to do before, during, and after an interview—both phone and in-person—to clearly stand out from the other applicants and be recognized as a valuable addition to their team. The speaker is a well-known expert in helping job seekers land their first data science job, not only interviewing on behalf of his company but also holding mock data science interviews. He knows first-hand what a job seeker must do in order to be seen as a “must have” new hire.

At the end of this session, you will have step-by-step instructions on how to ace interviews and get the job of your dreams!

Become a Data Scientist without a PhD by Jared Heywood, Big Squid

There is a lot of demand for data scientists in the marketplace right now, but sometimes it can be hard to pass through the hiring gauntlet without an extensive background in the field and some people might not even know how to start on this path. This presentation utilizes the experiences of Jared Heywood, a business school alumnus, and how he made his foray into data science and has quickly progressed his career to be the lead data scientist for an auto-ml startup company. The presentation will cover areas such as:

Knowledge – where and how to learn what is needed

Experience – how to get relevant experience and prepare for a real job

Presence – how to become recognized as a peer by other data scientists and a good candidate by recruiters and hiring managers

Listeners of this session will walk away knowing that they can become a successful data scientist, no matter their background. The market demand is there and the resources are available for them as long as they just take the initiative.

How To Find A Career Path In Data Science by Hui Lin, PhD, Netlify

Beyond Individual Contribution: How to Lead Data Science Teams by Juan Manuel Contreras, PhD, Even

Despite the increasing number of data scientists who are asked to take on leadership roles, there are still few resources on how to manage data scientists. There is also scant practical advice on how to serve as head of a data science practice: how to set a vision and craft a strategy for an organization to use data science. In this talk, I will describe my experience as a data science leader at a political party and at a fintech startup, share lessons learned from these experiences, and offer a framework for how new data science leaders can better transition to both managing data scientists and heading a data science practice.

Building Your Portfolio for Data Science Interview by Long Pei, PhD, Linkedin

Data driven mindset has revolutionized a lot of domains in the modern world and there is an increasing demand for data scientists in the job market. Many new graduates are exploring opportunities as data scientist, data analyst or data engineer and many working professionals with industrial experience candidates also consider transitioning their career into the data science field. The data science interview can be a seemingly tough task, however, it is by no default a mission impossible to build your profile for the data science interview with comprehensive preparation plan to integrate knowledge and hand on practice. This presentation will cover some common advice for preparing data science interview and include an interactive session with the audience.
Knowledge – typical interview modules
Practice – how to behave well for phone screen and onsite interview
Insights – what is daily life like as a data scientist
Attendees will walk away with better idea about how they can build up profile for the data science interview and enter the fast growing field.

A mid career transition to a professional data scientist By Sri Kanajan, uber

The media’s recent portrayal of the data science career path as an extremely attractive career option can appear very enticing. However, for those who have dedicated a large part of their working life towards traditional career paths that are now no longer inspiring or motivating, making this transition to become a data scientist can seem like a very daunting endeavor if not a pipe dream. This talk is to describe in hyper realistic terms what to expect during this transition and learn techniques that may help, from someone who has been through this transition.
