Abstract: 

Visualization is the great democratizer in this new world of big data and machine learning. Analysts, statisticians, data scientists and machine learning practitioners still and will still need to communicate their findings and models to others. And while everyone can understand a visualization, not everyone can understand a model or a formula.

Thoughtful Visualization with R is a talk about spinning up and building visualizations layer-by-layer with ggplot2, the main plotting library in R in order to communicate complex models or ideas to those less technical. It is about considering the entire the visualization pipeline: fetch, clean, layer, polish. Instead of just “let’s throw this pristine .csv file of the iris data set into a scatterplot”!

In Thoughtful Visualization with R I will explore 3 unique multi-geom plots, how to how to work with fake and simulated data to test ideas and sketch out visualization prototypes. And how, After a few sketches and some exploratory analysis, to fetch or load the actual data and start layering and polishing the graphic.
